Matt Wonski runs Town Hall Delicatessen, an iconic staple in South Orange Village that has been an institution since 1927. He has complete responsibility for managing the Deli, from purchasing to human resources, marketing, customer service, training, food safety and maintenance as well as for all the financial aspects of running a high-volume food business. Matt is a two-term member of the South Orange Village Center Alliance (SOVCA), the volunteer not-for-profit management entity of our Village's Special Improvement District since 2014. During his tenure, Matt served as treasurer of the SOVCA from July 2017 to July 2018.
Born in New York and raised in the Montrose and Newstead neighborhoods of South Orange, Matt is the youngest of three children. He attended SOMA schools through the 8th grade and then Seton Hall Prep. Matt studied at Montclair State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Sciences, with a concentration in Management.
An entrepreneur since his youth, Matt first started his own business when he was just 7 years old, getting paid to collect pine cones from neighbors’ lawns, creating wax-covered pine cone fire-starters, and then re-selling them door-to-door to the same neighbors! He even employed a friend to collect the pine cones for him, giving him his first experience in covering payroll cost.
Matt commenced his food career during his sophomore year of high school, when he began working in local restaurants, holding a variety of positions at several noteworthy establishments in South Orange, such as: Cafe Arugula, Bottagara South, and Antonella's. After completing his studies, his culinary and business expertise allowed him to redesign and relocate the Town Hall Deli to its present location in the heart of the Village. He also assisted with his family’s purchase and resale of multiple properties and businesses in South Orange, including most recently Morgan’s Liquors in Seton Village, the neighborhood where he currently resides. Matt is a hard-working millennial and is proud to be part of the community as a business and property owner, landlord, and engaged citizen.
Matt will continue to contribute to the success and growth of the thriving Village of South Orange by applying common sense ideas, his business acumen, and community engagement skills.
As a Village Trustee, one of his main objectives will be to deliver high quality services to residents while increasing efficiency with a goal of reducing the growth in the tax burden for all.
